Hot Mix Asphalt Candy

Ever wondered what asphalt tastes like? If you make it right, it tastes like chocolate and peanut butter! This recipe is a great way to show kids how asphalt is made. The oatmeal and peanuts are the aggregate and the chocolate/peanut butter mixture is the asphalt binder. From the kitchen of Mindy Lance.

IngredientsHot Mix Asphalt Candy
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup milk
1 stick margarine or butter
1/4 cup cocoa
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup chopped peanuts
1/2 cup crunchy peanut butter
3 cups oatmeal (not instant)

In a large bowl, combine oatmeal and chopped peanuts. In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, milk, butter and cocoa. Bring to a boil for 2 minutes, stirring frequently. Remove from the stove and add vanilla, salt and peanut butter.

Pour hot chocolate/peanut butter mixture over the oatmeal mixture. Stir by hand until all oatmeal is coated. Important: Work quickly because the chocolate will harden quickly. Place and spread the mixture in Pour out onto a baking sheet lined with wax paper. Let harden and then cut into squares. You may also drop the candy by the spoonful onto wax paper.

Asphalt pavement is the most recycled product in America - more than newspaper, aluminum cans or glass.
